If you have not heard of mehndi art, it is a type of body painting using a natural dye from a plant. Great thing is, it is only temporary, lasting between one to four weeks. All right, actually depending on the quality of mehndi & how frequent it gets washed!

If you are not sure what mehndi is, it is a paste made from a plant called Lawsonia Inermis. It gives a natural red dye that could stain your skin when the leaves are bruised. Nature's cold right?

Oh yes, mehndi is the other term!

Henna art originates from the middle eastern region, where it is used to beautify brides on their wedding day. Usually applied on the night before the marriage as an additional decorations to the brides.

Although you could, modern designs or images like those used for tattoos are not well used in the mehndi body art. When henna is used, the typical traditional designs are most popular.

However, making Indian mehndi on the back is not that popular. because it doesn't look as pretty on the back of the body compared to the hand or back of hand.


Indian mehndi art are usually made up of simple shapes, lines & designs. Usually the lines are finer than other cultures' & they prefer to fill most gaps, leaving less skin color exposed'. Sometimes the art is made up from the Hindu religious influences & auspicious symbols.
